How to back up your vault and move it to a new iPhone

Your Vaultage vault is left out of iPhone and iCloud backups, and it opens only on the device that created it. An encrypted backup file is the one way to protect it against loss and move it to another device.

Why the vault is not in your iCloud backup

If a vault were included in device backups, anyone who got hold of a backup could try to guess a six-digit PIN offline, at computer speed, without any delays. Tying the vault to a secret that never leaves the device stops that. The price is that you need to make your own backup.

Create an encrypted backup

  1. Open Vaultage and unlock your vault.
  2. Go to Settings and choose Create encrypted backup.
  3. Choose a backup password of at least 12 characters. It can be different from your vault password.
  4. Save the file somewhere that is not the phone itself: a computer, an external drive, or a cloud drive.

The backup file is encrypted with your backup password alone. Anyone who has the file can try to guess that password, so make it long. We cannot reset it.

Restore on a new iPhone or iPad

  1. Install Vaultage on the new device.
  2. Create a vault.
  3. In Settings, choose Restore from backup and select the backup file.
  4. Enter the backup password.
  5. Open a few items to check them before erasing the old device.

Restore after forgetting your vault password

You cannot reset a vault password, but you can restore a backup into a new vault: delete Vaultage, reinstall it, create a new vault, and restore the backup with its backup password.

How often to back up

Make a new backup after adding anything you could not replace, and before you update iOS, repair the phone, or switch phones. Delete old backup files you no longer need.

FAQ

Can I keep the backup file in iCloud Drive?

Yes. The file is encrypted, so iCloud Drive only stores scrambled data. Its safety depends entirely on the strength of your backup password.

Will my vault transfer with Quick Start or an iCloud restore?

No. The vault stays on the old device. Use an encrypted backup to move it.
